Inspection, testing and official control: three different roles

A clear explanation of what a third-party inspector can document, what a laboratory can analyse and what only an authority can decide.

01

Third-party inspection

An independent inspector works to an agreed client scope. The work can document product condition, quantity, packing, labels, temperature, loading and other observable or measurable criteria defined before the visit.

02

Laboratory testing

A laboratory analyses submitted samples using a specified method. The result applies to the sample, method and chain of custody described in the test documentation. Sampling and interpretation must match the intended market and requirement.

03

Official control

Border authorities and competent government agencies carry out official controls under their legal mandate. A private inspection or laboratory report may support a buyer's supplier-control process, but it does not replace an official decision or certificate.

04

How to use the three together

Define the buyer's acceptance questions first, then assign each question to the right evidence: field inspection, laboratory test or official procedure. This avoids asking a visual inspection to prove something it cannot establish.
